The AvantFairfax Festival is a celebration of outsider music, unbound by any one genre but rather binding artists whose work exists in between genres and outside the mainstream.  In an effort to connect underappreciated musicians with the local community, AvantFairfax brings artists from diverse backgrounds, from prog to freak-folk, american primitive, and bluegrass to experimental electronics, noise, and ambient soundscapes to heavy psych and improvised weirdness to extremely talented jazz musicians who have yet to be recognized by more prosaic consumers of music.

First held in 2009, the Avant Fairfax Festival celebrates outsider and experimental music across many genres. This year, we bring the fest back to celebrate the memory of Andrew McCarry who did so much to bring artists and fans of non-mainstream music together in Northern Virginia.

From 2009 to 2011, Andrew's humble desire to host a few low-key shows for dirt cheap to connect genre-bending musicians with future fans grew into a multi-day music festival.

This is a fully nonprofit operation focused solely on connecting artists with an interested public for a day of artistic community building and exciting sounds.  It will be weird, but there will surely be something for everyone.
